After 7 years, we, unfortunately, had to put Zoey down. She had gotten so old, she she completely deaf, could barely see and had recently become incontinent. It was time.
We adopted her from the Animal Control because her previous owner had died. We got her a few months before Reece was born. We never actually knew how old she was. Animal Control guessed she was about 7 years old when we got her, so that put her at 14 years old.
I actually didn't think anyone would think much of me putting her down; but I was very mistaken. As soon as we told the family, they all started freaking out. I think it's just one of those things where you realize, at the moment something is going away, how much you took it for granted. It was a total bawl fest.
Gideon insisted on accompanying me to the vet; which was probalby a mistake. It was a little more traumatic than I was expecting. I'll spare the details.
We buried her in the back yard; next to the rabbits.
A few things about Zoey:
- She always came into a room and stared at Megan. Megan hated it. I always thought it was some kind of power play.
- She had a funny sounding yaun.
- She would shake all the time. Between the staring, yauning, and shaking, it drove Megan nuts.
- She was super well trained and smart. We rarely ever put her on a leash because she was keyed in on where she should be.
- Against Megan's instructions, I fed her dinner food all the time.
Here's some photos of her over the years.
