Ok, so I took Hudson to the dentist today. For the fourth time! She has two cavaties on her front teeth which the doctor said is usually from going to sleep with a bottle. Which is odd because Tommy and I are very firm belivers in the no bottle at bed time! Anyhow -
Visit #1 - The dentist had prescribed me some medicine to give Hudsy at home that would "put her to sleep." The bottle said to mix it with juice. Great I thought that will make it easier for her to take. Big MISTAKE #1. The medicine was the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted. Think off the hottest gum you have ever chewed mixed with rubbing alcohol (only a dentist would prescribe something this disgusting to a 3 year old!). After one swig of the juice Hudsy was done. So now instead of one quick dose of medicine I had to force feed an entire glass of juice. After Tommy and I held her down and she spit out about half of the medicine we were off. We got to the office and she was still wide awake. After sitting in the office for about 15 minutes she fell fast asleep on my lap. Great I thought that wasn't so bad. We sat her in the chair numbed up her mouth the dentist started drilling and she woke right up. She was not having any more of that and she got out of the chair and stumbled around the office. Litterally stumbled, she looked like a drunk sailor. The dentist asked if I just wanted to hold her down while he finished, or would I like to up the dosage on the sleeping medicine and try again. MISTAKE #2 - I reply - oh lets try again, I don't want to tramatize her towards the dentist.
Visit #2 We up the medicine dosage. I request the pharmist to mix the medicine with grape flavoring. See how smart I am. MISTAKE #3 flavoring the medicine with a purple colored dye. This time no mixing with juice I am going to give it to her straight up. Only problem is she remembers how disgusting this medicine is from the first round. By the way the flavoring did not disguise the taste at all! So now not only does she spit all the medicine out but it stains her shirt purple. I figure what the heck maybe she got some medicine in her and will fall asleep anyway. Off to the dentist we go. This time she never falls asleep she just plays in the office and after an hour I give up. The dentist suggests we go to a pediatric dentist. MISTAKE #4 ok let's try a pediatric dentist.
Visit #3 I explain to the receptionist at the pediatric dentist's office all that we have been through and can this dentist do anything different? Her reply well you will have to bring her in so the dentist can check out her teeth. We meet with "new" dentist, who preceeds to tell us that she will prescribe a medicine that will put Hudson to sleep and then she will work on the teeth. Hold on I say, a disgusting medicine that tastes like drinking a bottle of whiskey. Yup, that's the one. Oh and by the way, she says I am a specialist and your insurance company will only pay 20%. So I thought, wow, I can go through the same thing all over and again, but pay more this time? Where do I bend over? I decide that since it is going to cost me more I will go back to original dentist. I call the dentist and ask if their is any other way we can do this like tablets that I can crush. He's reply oh yes, would that be easier. Easier? Easier? No it's easier to sit on my daughter hold all her limbs down shove medicine down her throat as she spits it back up.
Visit #4 (today) MISTAKE #(I lost count) I cut open the pill to start crushing it (this time is going to be different I am mixing it with pudding:)) When I cut open the pill liquid starts gushing out. Yup, you guessed it the same nasty liquid from previous failed attempts. I hope for the best, mix it with the pudding and give the spoon to my daughter. Not a chance, she quickly tastes nasty flavor and spews pudding all over her face. I try to cram as much pudding back down as possible. All the while basically promising her a pony if she will just eat the pudding. After much drama I decide to see if she can just swallow the second pill with out cutting it open. I give her the pill a glass of juice and valla one swallow and the pill is down. Wow, really could have used that the first time. So off we go to the dentist. We arrive and she is wide awake as usually. After about 45 minutes I decide that we are just going to have to hold her down and have the dentist do the work. Sounds fun doesn't it! It takes four of us to hold down a 30 pound 3 year old while the dentist works on her teeth. Anyone who may have walked in the office during that time period I am sure left to find a different dentist. It sounded as if the dentist actually had her hanging from the ceiling while he ripped out each of her teeth. Needless to say it was a very traumatic experience for all parties involved. Morale of the story is : I hate my crappy teeth genes that I gave my poor daughter.
