Tate had recently wrapped up the Harry Potter series and, of course, wanted a Harry Potter birthday. It was actually a really fun birthday.
Megan's friend, Melissa, created the best Harry Potter cake I've ever seen. It was awesome (even though she'd never read the books).
Megan made these spell books and I made unique wands for each for each of the kids. Those were a big hit. The kids spent the first 30 minutes memorizing and casting spells.
Next was "potions class". This is where things got a little crazy. The first experiment was "elephant toothpaste". We had the kids mix yeast, water, food coloring, dish soap and hydrogen peroxide into a plastic bottle. Foam is supposed to pour out of the top, but the first time I did it nothing was happening, so I put the lid on and shook the bottle. It immediately pressurized, so I tried to get the lid off and it exploded across the table right into Conner Checketts face (see picture).
After this, we did a "lava lamp" experiment with water, oil, salt and food coloring. These experiments were a bit messier than we had expected. Had to clean up the kids a bit afterward. Oops.
We finished off the activities with Quidditch. It went better than expected as everyone seemed to really enjoy it so I can't complain.
