Christmas Gifts

Giving Christmas presents has been an interesting dynamic between Megan and I.

GIVING GIFTS TO MEGAN

Megan loves getting and opening presents on Christmas. This is a big deal for her, so I try my best to come up with thoughtful presents.

It's a challenge because Megan likes to know about all our expenses. For a while I would use a credit card specifically set up to use for presents. But the last few years, Megan just usually refrains from looking at bank account for a few weeks (this is hard for her to do).

I avoid making large purchases because I actually want Megan's opinion on these things. There was the year I bought Megan an expensive ice maker (because she really likes crushed ice), but she didn't like it so we sold it.

So, I usually settle on a few things; art (I usually make it for her), jewelry, utility stuff (like replacement knobs for her cooking range), food (expensive cheeses and crackers) and clothes.

Both the jewelry and clothes are hard. Megan actually likes it when I get her clothes because she wants to wear things that I think are attractive. But then she also might hate them.

GIVING GIFTS TO TOMMY

So, I could care less about getting gifts. I'm not a gift person, but because Megan is, she insists on getting me gifts.

I would assign Megan's gifts to 3 categories; clothes, tools, and weird stuff. Clothes and tools are tough because I'm pretty specific about what I want. She's definitely hit some homeruns though.

Inevitably, every year, Megan gets me something that falls into the "Weird stuff" category. This is like something from "as seen on TV" or some clever tool she found on an instagram ad.

I haven't been very receptive to these gifts and Megan gets highly offended by this. She said I return 92% of her gifts.

So, after the Christmas morning ephoria, there is a less happy conversation about what is going to be taken back.

Here is some of this year's rejected gifts.

Oh well, this is Christmas.
